EDIT: a note to everyone who isn't British, or aware of British expressions: "Flaming Nora" is often used as a slightly more polite way of saying "bloody hell" I just thought it would be funny.
Appearance:

She, like most castle ghosts is semi transparent. However on occasions when she is particularly angry, upset or cold, she will spontaneously combust, i.e.: burst into flames. This ghostly inferno, unlike her doesn’t go through things and will set things alight. Shortly before setting herself on fire she is often heard to emit a banshee like wail, although she the official Banshee Association Of Great Britain kicked her out after she set their only meeting table alight, so she is not officially a banshee anymore. When not on fire, she is a tall but beautiful ethereal figure, with shocking red hair, which is impossibly long. Her eyes are deep green and she has pale white skin. Her ghostly appearance is the one she had in her youth, as this was the happiest time of her life. She wears the traditional red, black and green highland tartan of the MacDhubhshinth family (see history) in a long cloak over her 14th century Hogwarts robes.

History:

Of her death:

Grainne died in 1583 in the European wide witch-hunt phenomenon. The witch hunters, by some stroke of luck, actually discovered a witch. She was burnt at the stake at the gallows in Edinburgh after being thoroughly tortured by the Witchfinder General of Scotland. She actually resisted torture longer than her fellow muggle accused, but after she had a cage of starving rats placed on her chest and they began to eat her alive, she confessed to every crime she was accused of. In theory she couldn’t die through fire, with her powers, but a certain sister of the former Thane of Skye was taking the opportunity to sap her of her powers through a strong curse, this meant that her body succumbed to the pain. Hence, the setting on fire and screaming.

Of her life:

She was born in 1540 to a small warring Muggle family in the Highlands of Scotland, where her male relatives had a habit of drinking too much and then declaring war. This meant that her family name didn’t really last very long as their drinking also adversely affected their abilities with a sword. Her father died when she was young, but this wasn’t uncommon at the time. Her family noticed when she reached about 9 that she had some very unusual abilities, so she was often hidden away from their friends and treated as an outcast. She liked to spend time in the forests and mountains near her house, walking and enjoying the landscape. Her magical powers were properly discovered while on one of these walks. In an forest glade near her home, she ran into the Thane of the Isle of Skye, Tearlach MacDhubhshith (the unusual last name is the name of a real family from the Western Isles, and it means “Son of black fairies” in Gaelic as they were rumoured “to know about the black fairies. So I used this as a reference to magic.) who seemed to be collecting some thing from a nearby tree. He grew angry when she asked what he was doing and hit her, which caused her to lose control of her unknown magical abilities and set his kilt on fire. The Thane noticed her ability and being a wizard himself, which had forced him to go into hiding on the Isle of Skye, immediately recognised what she was capable of. He took her back to the Isle of Skye with him, claiming that she was his own daughter to hide her Muggle blood. He explained her powers to her, forced her to adopt his name and almost brainwashed her into believing that she was his daughter, in fact he almost began to believe it as well.
When she was 11 she was summoned to Hogwarts and thanks to Tearlach’s influence she convinced everyone she was pure blood, despite that she actually wanted to be recognised for what she was. However, she wasn’t so sure about this herself and she knew it would be dangerous to say otherwise. She was sorted into Hufflepuff but certainly wasn’t the typical Hufflepuff, she was reasonably intelligent and was known to have a mischievous streak as well as her inherited short temper.

She graduated from Hogwarts with reasonable results, she wasn’t a spectacular student, but she was well liked, especially amongst the male population of the school. She returned to her assumed father’s home on Skye and he quickly used her as a magical assistant. He taught her how to keep the Muggle population of the island oblivious to her abilities and they got on well together. However, Tearlach’s sister was jealous of the help he was giving Grainne, and had always been suspicious of her sudden arrival in the family, so when Tearlach caught a fatal illness and he lay on his death bed, his sister laced his drink with Veritaserum and extracted the truth, which she revealed upon his death. Grainne was banished from the family and shunned from the wizarding world. She returned to her Muggle way of life, determined not to use the skills that the people that had shunned her taught her. However she did eventually begin to use them to help her friends out and have mischievous revenge on her enemies in secret, which inevitably led to her discovery as a witch in 1582. (Actually they accused her because she was old and had “a funny look”)

Personality:
She used to be a fun loving sociable person when she was alive, and she still is to some extent, but when she is reminded of her death she can become very melancholy and cruel. She is always prepared for a joke and is one of the few people who find Peeves funny. She isn’t really one to instigate jokes though; she just prefers to scare the living daylights out of students. She thinks it’s hilarious. She can be quite bitter at times when she remembers how the wizards shunned her because of her blood, and at these times loves to scare people. However, she has a “no scaring Muggle borns” policy. Despite this she still feels more at home in Hogwarts than in the muggle world, as she will not forgive them for her persecution, so normally she is quite sociable with most wizards, as long as they don’t mention her blood line, or rather her lack of one. She carries herself with an air of supremacy and grandeur, determined not to let people find out her Muggle blood. She has a constant inner conflict, as she resents both the Muggle world for her persecution and the wizarding world for her rejection. So she can appear to have two completely different personas. She is determined to find the descendants of her killers and make them suffer the way she did. So any Scottish, pureblood wizard/witch better watch their back.
